This artifact is an essay of how I would take care of a bullying scenario with one of my students. I think this was a great essay to write because it made me think about how I would handle an issue like this. I hope cyberbullying won't happen in my classroom but if it does, I'll have an idea of what to do.
First of all, I would sit down with James and find out why he is frustrated and saddened by the comments of his peers. I would ask for specific incidents or actions that have occurred. Then if possible, I would get the names of the students who are doing the bullying. During the meeting with James, I would complete the cyberbullying incident tracking form. Even if I didn’t feel like there was a safety threat, I would also notify the school liaison security officer as well as the school administration.
After talking with James, I would talk to the students who are bullying. That is, if I could identify them. If I can’t identify them, they I would have the school security officer or police try to track the bullies’ messages.
If the students who are doing the bullying are identified, I would also have a meeting with them to hear their side of the story. I would definitely want to have another staff member with me when discussing the situation with all parties involved. During the meetings with all involved, I would go over the definition of what cyberbullying is. Sometime later, I would have a class discussion in all my classes about cyberbullying and how the school and I as a teacher will not tolerate it. Hopefully this would be something that the principal would do as a whole school assembly.
Afterwards, along with administration, I would talk to all the parents of the students who are involved. I would let them know what the school policy is towards cyberbullying and what is being done now to handle the current situation involving their children. This would include telling the parents what the discipline procedures are for students who bully.
Hopefully, after discussing the situation with the target, bullies, parents and school, the bullying would stop.
